Sandvik SAF 2205 Sandvik Materials Technology

Jan 17, 2020 · The high resistance of Sandvik SAF 2205 is shown in the figure by the fact that very high stresses, about 1.1 times the 0.2% proof strength, are required to induce stress corrosion cracking. The resistance of welded joints is slightly lower. The ferritic chromium steel ASTM 410 fails at considerably lower stress. Figure 9.

SS2205 has good oxidation resistance, both in intermittent and continuous service, up to 980°C. However, continuous use of 2205 between 300°C and 950°C may embrittle the steel and lower the corrosion resistance. At the lower temperature range, the embrittlement is due to the precipitation of a (475°C embrittlement) and nitrides or carbides.

Differences Between Grade 2205 and 316 Stainless Steel

Grade 2205 stainless steel has as a ferritic-autentistic microstructure (consisting of 50% ferrite and 50% austenite, hence the term Duplex). Due to the their ferrite content, Grade 2205 stainless steels are magnetic, and the duplex structure makes for higher strength balustrade systems, with higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Corrosion Resistance Plus High Strength

Because of their high chromium content, duplex stainless steels offer excellent corrosion resistance in many process environments. LDX 2101 has, in most cases, better resistance than 304L and in some applications resistance comparable to 316L. 2304, in most cases, is equivalent to 316L., while 2205 and 2507 exhibit even better resistance than most conventional austenitic stainless steels.
